Sponsored Programs & Research Compliance

Funding Opportunities

The Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance (SPARC) assists researchers and research administrators find funding opportunities to support and promote research and scholarly activity at UNCW.

Grants by Fund Type

  • External Funding  Sponsored project funding comes from a range of external resources – i.e., business interests, nonprofit organizations, and sponsors (including government agencies). These sponsors publish various types of solicitations, announcing the availability of funding to support projects within specific areas of interest.

    Grants.gov

Your source to find and apply for federal grants. You can register in Grants.gov as an individual to begin receiving email alerts about grant opportunities in your discipline. You do not have to register in Grants.gov to apply for grants. Submission of Grants.gov applications is a SPARC function.

    Candid

GuideStar and Foundation Center joined forces to become Candid, a national database of private, nonprofit organizations.

Philanthropy News Digest is a service of Candid that hosts many requests for proposals (RFPs) on it's website.

Foundation Directory Online provides fundraising information for non-profits and charities as well as tools to find grants by type, value, year, recipient, donor and historical giving trends.
For login information, please contact Megan Gorham in the University Advancement office.

    Funding Publications

Chronicle of Higher Education – News, information, and jobs for college and university faculty members and administrators. Some articles are publicly available and reference grant opportunities.

Federal Register – Official daily publication for rules, proposed rules, and notices of federal agencies and organizations, as well as executive orders and other presidential documents.

NIH (National Institutes of Health) Guide for Grants and Contracts – Serves, in lieu of the Federal Register, as the official publication of NIH policies, procedures, and available funds.

NSF (National Science Foundation) Custom News Service – Email and web-based alert service about NSF news and publications.

    Federal and State Sponsors

Federal Agencies: We strongly encourage the use of grants.gov to search for federal grant opportunities, but you can always visit the agency website itself to read further about open opportunities.

If you want to see all the programs with a focus on broadening participation at NSF, you can use the new funding search tool

State Agencies:  OSBM Grant Management System – The Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM) maintains the Grants Management System, which serves as a central repository of state grant-funded assistance programs and awards.

    • Text Search

SPIN text search performs a full-text search against the entire text of the SPIN programs; this includes opportunity titles, sponsor names, synopses, objectives, as well as funding opportunity numbers, email addresses, keywords, and several other fields.

The search automatically invokes inflectional forms of the entered words. For example, a search for  test will scan all SPIN programs for: test, tests, tested, and testing.

The search also contains a number of capabilities to build complex searches with various logic and grammar parsing. The commands can be combined together, along with parenthetical logic to dictate the order of operations, for building complex queries defining exactly what you are looking for.

    • Keyword Search

Each opportunity in SPIN is catalogued with terms from their  keyword list. SPIN's  keyword search allows you to explicitly find opportunities that match one or more of the predefined keywords in our controlled vocabulary of approximately 3,500 terms.

Keywords can be combined in two ways with 'OR' or 'AND' operators. An 'OR' search will find opportunities that have either the keywords  Geochemistry  OR Geophysics ; an 'AND' search is more specific, and will find only those opportunities that have both  Geochemistry  AND Geophysics  keywords.

    • Advanced Search

Using SPIN's  advanced search interface, searches can be more specifically defined. A dropdown selection allows you to choose the fields to filter where the full text of the opportunity record contains or does not contain the entered selection.

Distinct fields generate AND queries while using the same field multiple times generates an OR query.

    • Create Funding Alerts

After a search has been created you can save the search and receive daily or weekly email alerts.  The email sends a list of relevant opportunities.

  • Limited Submission  When an organization limits the number of submissions allowed per institution for letters of intent, white papers, or full proposals, UNCW must make steps to ensure the university does not exceed the limit set for the funding opportunity.
