College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College-Level Examination Program® gives you the opportunity to receive college credit for what you already know by earning qualifying scores on any of 34 examinations. Earn credit for knowledge you have acquired through independent study, prior course work, on-the-job training, professional development, cultural pursuits, or internships

What do I have to do before I take a CLEP test?

Getting set up for a CLEP test is a two-step process. You must complete both steps outlined below.

1. Order CLEP Exam:

  • Order exam through the CLEP College Board
  • Pay exam fee, if required. There is no charge for active duty military personnel
  • Active duty - select the "DANTES-Funded Military Personnel" box
  • Print your Registration ticket and bring it on your testing day

2. Registration:

  • Reserve a seat through the "Registration and Payment System"
  • Pay registration fee, if required ($28.50). There is no charge for active duty military personnel
  • Active duty - select the "CLEP - Military Personnel Only" registration tab to schedule a CLEP exam
  • Use your ticket ID from your Registration Ticket above

Who can take CLEP Tests at Camp Lejeune?

  • Military personnel (active and reserve) and military retirees
  • Adult family members of military and U.S. Department of Defense employees
  • Other civilians who have base access and those enrolled in the voluntary education program colleges/universities located aboard MCB Camp Lejeune or MCAS New River.

What if I have a disability and need special testing accommodations?

CLEP requires documentation of a disability in order to provide the appropriate test accommodations. Please contact the CLEP test administrator at 910.962.TEST (8378) for specific information PRIOR to scheduling an appointment.

How long and how expensive is a test?

Testing times will vary from semester, for the most current information please see the Testing Page.

The test is FREE one time per test for all eligible military personnel. Please contact the UNCW Testing Center located at MCB Camp Lejeune - 910.450.5876 - for further details regarding the cost of the CLEP test and eligibility requirements.

If a student needs an add-on essay to a certain exam, the student will need to request the essay 30 days in advance. For non-military, there is an additional $10 charge for the essay. If the student is active duty, the fee will be waived as long as the student submits his or her name and date of birth when requesting the add-on essay.

Effective 11 December 2010, DANTES will no longer fund active duty/reserve military personnel retesting on previously funded and failed CLEP or DSST exams. As a result, military personnel taking exams after 11 June 2010 who do not receive a passing score will be required to pay (out-of-pocket) for all exam retakes. Personnel failing to pay retest fees will not have their scores transmitted to their respective colleges or military transcripts. What if I need to retake an exam?

CLEP exams are allowed to be repeated after a 90-day waiting period. Examinees retesting before the 90-day waiting period has elapsed will have their test scores invalidated, be required to wait an additional 90-days, and forfeiting all retesting fees paid.

Which tests can I take?

There are 34 computer-based tests available in five categories: Composition and Literature, Business, History and Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, and Foreign Languages.

How many college credits will I receive?

It depends on the school you will be attending. Listed on The Collegeboard's website are the various CLEP examinations and required minimum scores. UNCW students may check the CLEP course equivalents for a complete listing of UNCW courses, credit, and required minimum scores.

What is DSST?

The DANTES Subject Standardized Test® (DSST) gives you the opportunity to receive college credit for what you already know by earning qualifying scores on any of the DSST examinations.

Who can take DSST Tests at Camp Lejeune?

  • Military personnel (active and reserve) and military retirees
  • Adult family members of military and U.S. Department of Defense employees
  • Other civilians who have base access and those enrolled in the voluntary education program colleges/universities located aboard MCB Camp Lejeune or MCAS New River

What do I need to do prior to the test?

All testers will need to know their 4-digit Institution Score Report Recipient Code. This code can be found at www.getcollegecredit.com/institutions/search. Please bring this code on your testing day. Testers also need to bring two forms of ID and a credit card. Your test score will be available 24 hours after taking the exam, to view your results log in to http://ibt.prometric.com/dsst.

How long and how much is a test?

DSST tests are 2 hours long.

For eligible military personnel, DSST testing is FREE, however military personnel who do not receive a passing score will be required to pay (out-of -pocket) for re-takes. Please contact the UNCW Testing Center 910.962.TEST (8378) for further details and eligibility requirements.

For everybody else a DSST fee must be paid by credit card on your testing day. The cost of this fee can be found on their "Questions and Answers" page.UNCW's administrative fee of $25 (+ $3.50 convenience fee) has to be paid online at UNCW's Registration and Payment system.

What if I need to retake an exam?

Examinees must wait 90 calendar days for retakes. Examinees retesting before the 90-day waiting period has elapsed will have their test scores invalidated, be required to wait an additional 90-days, and forfeiting all retesting fees paid.

Reschedule

For online registrants: at least 24 hours prior to your appointment, you can reschedule at the UNCW's Registration and Payment website. Click on: My Registrations. Enter your email address. Reschedule your appointment.

How many college credits will I receive?

There are 37 computer-based tests available, it will depend on the school you will be attending, but you usually received 3 college credit for a DSST test. Proctored Tests/Exams General Information

A proctored test or exam is overseen by an impartial individual, called a proctor. Many universities require the proctoring of tests or exams to ensure the security and integrity of their material.

Proctoring services are available to active duty/reserve military personnel, military dependents, students taking classes aboard MCB Camp Lejeune or MCAS New River, DoD personnel, or other civilians with base access. Base passes will not be issued to use test proctoring services. Appropriate attire is required and must be in compliance with base regulations.

Proctoring services are available for computer-based tests or exams and paper-based tests or exams only. Proctoring services cost $25 per test (+ $3 convenience fee) for up to three hours of testing, and $15 for each additional hour. No discounts or free proctored services are available.

Step One - Appointments:

Appointments must be scheduled through UNCW's Registration and Payment website.

On UNCW's Registration and Payment website choose the "Proctor" tab. There you can select your date(s) and time(s) for your appointment(s).

  • Any special testing requirements or needs must be articulated at the time of scheduling so accommodations can be made in advance. Only available dates and times will display
  • Proctored exams can be scheduled in 1 hour increments. Check with your school/instructor how much time you have for your test/exam and schedule accordingly.
  • Not all tests or exams can be scheduled this way (for ACCUPLACER choose 'Untimed Placement/Assessment tests'). If you are unable to schedule an appointment or have difficulty registering for an exam, please contact the proctor. (See contact information above or below)

Step Two - Payment:

Students must pay through UNCW's Registration and Payment system.

Once you are at UNCW's Registration and Payment website, just follow the instructions to pay for your test(s).

  • Testing costs are $25 per test (+ $3.50 convenience fee) per exam/test for up to three 3 hours and $15 for each additional hours.
  • Appointments can be rescheduled. Please notify the proctor via email onslow@uncw.edu or by phone 910.962.TEST (8378).
  • If you have difficulties registering for an exam, please contact the proctor.(See contact information above or below)

Step Three - Test Material:

At least two business days in advance, contact the Proctor Administrator to confirm your test material has been received at onslow@uncw.edu or by phone at 910.962.TEST (8378).

Typically the proctor sends out a confirmation email to you when your testing materials have been received.

Step Four - Test Day:

Arrive 10-15 minutes early at Room 121 at the John A. Lejeune Education Center.

  • Bring two photo identifications (military ID, passport, driver's license) and payment (printed receipt).
  • Please review our Extension website for directions.
  • Base passes will not be issued.
  • Appropriate attire is required and must be in compliance with base regulations.
  • Make sure to review the UNCW proctor policies before arriving at your appointment.
