In observance of Veterans Day and National Native American Heritage Month, NC Commission of Indian Affairs Chairman Ricky Burnett will share his unique perspectives and first-hand experiences about military service and leadership.
Burnett will recount his experiences in the U.S. Navy and discuss the intersection between military service and Indigenous culture. He will also highlight his contributions to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, the largest tribe east of the Mississippi River and the ninth largest in the nation.

About Ricky Burnett
Governor Roy Cooper appointed Rev. Ricky Burnett as chairman of the N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs on July 31, 2019. Burnett is the 10th person to hold this position since the commission’s establishment in 1972.
Since his initial appointment, Burnett has served on the Indian Housing, Cultural Resources, and Indian Land Trust committees. He is also very active on the North Carolina Pow-Wow Circuit, where he has served as arena director and Pow-Wow coordinator.
Appointed to the commission by the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina in March 2017, Burnett served as a member of the Lumbee Tribal Council for 12 years and held the position of Speaker of the Tribal Council. Burnett is a pastor at Cape Fear Baptist Church in Fayetteville, N.C. He served 24 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring at the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.
This year, our Veterans Week programming will take place from Monday, November 4 through Monday, November 11, culminating with our annual Veterans Day Ceremony and Staff & Faculty Appreciation Luncheon.
On Sunday, November 3, the staff and students of UNCW’s Office of Military Affairs will set up flags along College Road and throughout campus to honor our fallen military services members. The flags will be on display throughout Veterans Week and the Veterans Day holiday.
