Program Description
Ever wonder why fiddler crabs make holes in the marsh? Or why oysters build a reef? If so, you are thinking like a Marine Engineer because these are examples of ecosystem engineers – organisms that can create, change, or destroy a habitat that serves an entire ecosystem! Join us for a week of ecological exploration and engineering as you learn about these construction critters and explore the different ecosystems they engineer. Learn how birds, fish, crustaceans, and even humans can be ecosystem engineers!
Prerequisites
Must have completed first grade and turn 7 by the start of the program.
Highlights
- Build a simplified hydraulic arm to sample our simulated hydrothermal vent.
- Investigate how marine organisms are engineering their habitat.
- Discover beginner coding with our BeeBots.
- Explore the beach, marsh and fouling station while conducting fun hands-on science and engineering activities.
