University Members Appointed to Hispanic/Latino Commission
Four esteemed university members have been chosen to contribute their expertise to the newly formed New Hanover County Hispanic/Latino Commission.
Approved by the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners in February 2023, the 11-member commission will advise county leaders on matters related to the Hispanic/Latino community and serve as a liaison. The county's establishment of the Hispanic/Latino Commission marks a significant step towards promoting diversity and inclusivity.
Comprising individuals from various walks of life, including academia, the commission aims to address the unique needs and concerns of the Hispanic/Latinx community.
Appointed members are:
- Dr. Amanda Boomershine, professor, Department of World Languages and Cultures
- Dr. Suzanna Lopez-Legentil, associate professor, Center for Marine Science
- Dr. Edel Segovia '98, '12EdD, director, Centro Hispano and co-chair, Latino Alliance of Wilmington
- Chris Montero ‘12, ‘16M
"The creation of the new NHC commission brings much-needed Hispanic/Latino representation to the table, ensuring a more inclusive and diverse decision-making process," said Segovia. "This development is especially crucial considering the significant demographic growth of the Hispanic/Latino population, ensuring their voices are heard and their perspectives are taken into account."
