Erin M. Wax

Clinical Assistant Professor

Dr. Wax has dedicated her career to women's health and improving healthcare access and quality in her community. Dr. Wax graduated with her BSN from Salisbury Sate University in Maryland. Her passion for public health led her to Johns Hopkins Hospital where she worked on a HIV/AIDS dedicated unit while completing her MSN at The Johns Hopkins University. She would later assume the role of nurse manager in an outpatient clinic at The Johns Hopkins University, where she developed a nursing model to improve access to care for the surrounding HIV community. Dr. Wax moved to North Carolina and gained experience in evidence-based practice as an Outcomes Specialist for a rural hospital. She later earned her certification in infection control as an Infection Control Practitioner before obtaining her Post Master's Family Nurse Practitioner at East Carolina University. Most recently Dr. Wax earned her DNP in 2020 from UNCW and her DNP project was titled Addressing Obesity in a Rural Women’s Health Clinic. Dr. Wax continues to practice as a FNP in a Women's Health clinic in rural eastern North Carolina and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington since 2021.

Specialization in Teaching

Dr. Wax is the course coordinator for the women's health course in the DNP FNP program. She has also taught the DNP Project courses as well as courses focused on evidenced based practice and Quality Improvement.

Research Interests

Dr. Wax's research focuses on perimenopause, menopause, sexual dysfunction, HPV, STIs, obesity, and overall wellness.

Professional Service

Dr. Wax has 27 years of experience as a registered nurse and 16 years experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Community Engagement

Committed to service, Dr. Wax volunteers with the Carteret Health Care Foundation and The Crystal Coast Housing Collaborative working to bridge healthcare gaps in her community.

Honors & Awards

Dr. Wax was awarded, along with other DNP faculty, the High Impact Practice (HIPS) Pedagogy Award for the addition of a new pelvic model for simulation in women's health. Additionally, she and her colleague received the 2025 Gender Studies Research Center Fellowship for their scholarship in women's health and obesity.
