Nsikanabasi S Umo
Assistant Professor
Dr. Nsikanabasi Silas Umo is an Assistant Professor specializing in marine and atmospheric chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. His research focuses on the composition, chemistry, and biogeochemistry of aerosol particles in the environment, with applications in air quality, climate studies, material science, and water security.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Umo has held research appointments in several internationally recognized institutions, including the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), the University of Wollongong (Australia), the National Center for Atmospheric Research (USA), and the University of Leeds (UK). His work has advanced understanding of aerosol-cloud interactions and the processes governing ice nucleation in clouds, contributing to climate modelling and environmental policy.
Dr. Umo has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals such as Nature, Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, and Environmental Science & Technology. His work has accrued over 1,450 citations with an h-index of 19 and a field-weighted citation impact of 4.8, indicating influence far above the global average in his field.
His research has been supported by competitive fellowships and awards, including the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowship in Germany, and he has received multiple awards including international travel grants and academic excellence awards recognizing his scholarly achievements. Dr. Umo also contributes to global research networks through collaborations, invited talks, and reviewing roles for leading journals in atmospheric science.
