Karen Thompson wants Seahawks to love where they live. As the communication specialist for the Office of Housing and Residence Life, she enjoys her role in building a strong sense of community at UNCW by showcasing programs and services that cultivate an environment where students can thrive.

Thompson coordinates events and tours, manages website content and develops the unit’s guidebook app. She also sets up table sessions on campus that provide Housing and Residence Life staff an opportunity to chat with students about on-campus living.

“I love telling the story of all the fabulous programming we have going on in Housing and Residence Life as well as sharing our story of commitment to customer service with our resident students,” said Thompson. “I am passionate about my work and this institution.”

Thompson joined UNCW in July 2015. She previously worked in the property management industry, as well as for Walt Disney World and New Hanover County Schools.

“I loved the energy on campus and everyone I met that had worked for or who was working for UNCW always had so much passion for their work,” said Thompson. “It seemed like such a collegial environment, and it’s all true!”

Thompson plays a significant role in planning Move-In Day, an annual event where thousands of volunteers help first-year students move into their residence halls.

“My first thought was ‘I am planning for one of the hugest events of my career,’ and, honestly, I was a bit overwhelmed,” she said. “However, I was in good hands; the Move-In team quickly brought me up to speed and the rest is history. Seeing it come together each year and being a part of the big picture is extremely gratifying. I love that our university offers students so many opportunities to dive in and get involved.”
