Jean-Anne Sutherland

Dr. Sutherland came by sociology via a journey through the study of theatre, literature, and humanistic psychology. It was an interesting path and one that has resulted in an appreciation of people, motivations, behaviors, expressions, and thought. She arrived at UNCW in 2007 and has been relishing the University, her departmental colleagues, and Wilmington. She loves her dogs.

Research Interests

My research interests are quite varied, beginning with Sociology of Mothering and expanding into the area of Sociology Through Film. My work encompasses aspects of Gender, Work & Family, Social Psychology, Intersectionality, Feminist thought, and Sociology of Emotions. Current work has also focused on the scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Community Engagement

For years I served on the board of LINC (Leading into New Communities) and so I have an interest in people transitioning from prison back into the community. I now serve on the board of Port City Period which is a non-profit aimed at empowering youth.
