Tamlyn Shields
Senior Lecturer
Tamlyn Shields earned her BS and MA degrees in Exercise Physiology from East Carolina University. She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and an American College of Sports Medicine Clinical Exercise Physiologist. She is certified as an AHA Basic Life Support and First Aid Instructor, Wilderness and Remote First Aid Instructor, Wilderness First Responder, and Functional Movement Screen specialist (Level 1 and 2). Her academic career began as a Research Associate, where she coordinated both community outreach and research projects at East Carolina University and later for the Obesity Prevention Initiative housed at UNCW. She currently teaches courses in Facilitating Behavior Change, Exercise Prescription I (to prepare students for the nationally accredited ACSM EP-C exam), Exercise Prescription II, Field Experience in Exercise Science, and Leadership Skills for Adventure Exercise.
Shields’s current research interests include the validity of various body composition instruments, the impact of time spent in nature on memory, creativity, and nature relatedness, and students' perceived personal and professional outcomes from applied learning courses and the aspects of those courses that facilitate the perceived outcomes.

Community Engagement
Shields is active on various community committees to encourage the development of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in the Cape Fear region, including the Terry Benjey Bicycling Foundation and the Wilmington Downtown Trail Steering Committee.
