With commencement ceremonies just days away, Micaela Rose Murphy ’19 is focused on the future and is ready to join the world as a UNCW alumna.

“Part of the work that I do with student ambassadors is focused on alumni. So, it’s been cool getting to attend all those events as a current student, but I’m excited to graduate be able to go to all those same events on the other side of things,” Murphy said.

Majoring in communication studies with a focus on integrated marketing communication, Murphy is also involved with a multitude of campus organizations. She works for Campus Life and also volunteers with the Student Philanthropy Committee.

“When I came to UNCW, I made a mission to get involved with as many things as I could and apply myself to the full extent that I could. It truly made all the difference in my own experience.”

During the summer of 2018, Murphy had the opportunity to study abroad in London, enrolling in courses that dealt with culture, fashion and media. She also participated in an applied learning experience, working as an intern at the PR company Half Penny London. After Murphy graduates, she has set her sights on working in brand identity and development.

She is grateful for the community that she has been immersed in for the past four years and shared that UNCW has exceeded all of her expectations – and those were high, based on the great experience her sister, Ashling Murphy ’16, had at UNCW. “The community here is hardworking and diligent when it comes to class. People work hard and they recognize that there is room for all of us to succeed.”

As a student ambassador, Murphy conducts tours for prospective students, and one of her favorite things to do is to give them a little friendly advice.

“I tell prospective students that you should take chances, and you should step out of your comfort zone and try different things. Forget the opinions of others and be who you want to be. Because it’s O.K if the student you want to be is not the student that you’ve always been.”
