Joseph W. Long

Associate Professor

Dr. Joe Long is an Associate Professor of Coastal Engineering and Director of the UNCW undergraduate Coastal Engineering program. His research focuses on the on the role that winds, waves, and currents have on transforming beaches and barrier islands on time scales ranging from extreme events (e.g., hurricanes) to decades.. This work combines both observations and numerical models to better understand physical coastal processes, inform coastal management decisions, and determine the vulnerability of communities and ecosystems. Prior to UNCW he was a Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow and then Research Civil Engineer/Oceanographer with the U.S. Geological Survey in St. Petersburg, FL from 2009 to 2018.
