We Are UNCW Telling our story, one Seahawk at a time.

Ken Kaiser

With the campus bustling with construction, Ken Kaiser’s goal is to help students, staff and visitors get around with ease.

Kaiser, the associate director of parking and transportation, spends his days overseeing these critical services at UNCW. Record-breaking enrollment, Hurricane Florence and numerous construction projects have made his job a challenge.

“We were very fortunate that we had already started some advanced planning to add parking, and we were also able to redirect some demand to other areas and still accommodate most needs,” he said. “We have added close to 200 available spaces for students and an additional 100 spaces for faculty and staff. We are also within a few months of completing a parking expansion that will add more than 500 parking spaces for students and staff.”

Parking facilities located near the intersection of Hurst Drive and Hamilton Drive are scheduled to open in late April.

In the early planning phases is also a new parking deck. Kaiser and his staff work closely with departments across campus to provide additional resources for staff and students. The university continues to invest in more sustainable ways to support students and the community, he said, and may explore promoting alternative means of transportation like carpooling, car sharing and shuttle services.

“As we all know, added parking is not the only means to serve our customers, so we have also enhanced our shuttle operations to include items like larger shuttles, more frequent shuttles for high-demand routes and increased times of operation,” he continued. “With these changes and the recent upscaling of our UNCW Hawk Wheels Bike Share Program, we feel we have been able to make positive contributions to the campus community.”

One thing Kaiser, a native of Scotland, loves about his job is the opportunity to assist someone in need.

“I start each and every day knowing that I have the opportunity to make a positive difference in someone’s life, and each and every day I strive to do just that.”
