Scott M. James
Assoc Professor
Dr. James joined the department in 2007 after a visiting position at the University of Kentucky. Dr. James is originally from South Carolina. Outside interests include photography and music.
Education
B.A. in English, Connecticut College.
B.A. in Philosophy, University of Washington.
M.A. in Philosophy, University of Maryland.
Ph.D. in Philosophy, University of Maryland.
Specialization in Teaching
Dr. James teaches various courses in ethics: Introduction to Ethics, Medical Ethics, Evolutionary Ethics, and Special Topics courses. Additionally, Dr. James regularly teaches the seminar: Death, Dying, and the Meaning of Life.
Research Interests
Dr. James specializes in various areas of value theory: evolutionary ethics, meta ethics, and theories of well-being.
Professional Service
In addition to serving on various department- and college-level committees, Dr. James is the Chair of UNCW's Institutional Review Board, which reviews all human subject experiments conducted at the University.
Honors & Awards
Dr. James has received two teaching awards: Excellence in Teaching First-Year Students and the Chancellor's Teaching Excellence Award.
