Craig Galbraith

Distinguished Professor

Dr. Galbraith currently serves as the Duke Progress Energy/Betty Cameron Distinguished Professor and was previously Director of the UNCW Office of Innovation and Commercialization, the office responsible for the university’s technology transfer efforts. Dr. Galbraith was also President of the UNCW Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE). Dr. Galbraith is regularly recognized as one of the most published faculty members at UNCW. He has written eight books on entrepreneurship, leadership, and technology management, several which have been translated into different languages, and published over one-hundred scholarly papers in the top journals in his field, including the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Small Business Management, and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. Dr. Galbraith has extensive entrepreneurial and business experience. Since 1981 he has been an equity owner, founder, and executive team member for a number of start-up and early stage companies. For several years, Dr. Galbraith was a co-founder, and Chief Operating Officer of Biolife Technologies, Inc, an angel funded biotechnology firm. Dr. Galbraith also has extensive experience as an angel investor. Grew up in San Diego. In high school, surfed a lot, played basketball and tennis, and after a short stint in the Army went to college on a tennis scholarship, but found more success on the varsity fencing team. Life has now slowed down a bit. In addition to technology management, Dr. Gablraith writes more about economic history and humane capitalism.

Community Engagement

Dr. Galbraith continues to serve the public as a member of various public agencies and commissions in North Carolina. In the past, he has been a planning commissioner (City of Mission Viejo, CA), and industrial development officer (City of Irvine, CA). He has served on various base-closure commissions and testifies regularly before public agencies regarding economic development issues. He is currently Chairperson of both the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Historic Preservation Commission for the Town of Kure Beach in North Carolina.
