Marie E. Dawkins

Clinical Assistant Professor

Dr. Marie Dawkins earned her BSN from UNC Wilmington in 2005 followed by a nursing residency position at New Hanover Regional Medical Center Emergency Department. Since then, she has continued her career in Emergency Nursing with positions in leadership, information technology and education. She received her MSN and MHA at University of Phoenix in 2014 and completed a DNP in Leadership at the University of North Carolina Greensboro in May 2022. In addition to teaching in the Prelicensure, RN to BSN and MSN programs here at UNCW, she continues her clinical practice as a part-time staff nurse in the Emergency Department. She also serves as a faculty member for the ENA in their Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum, and as faculty for the American Heart Association. Dr. Dawkins is a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) & a Certified Clinical Nurse Educator (CNEcl).

Specialization in Teaching

Dr. Dawkins teaching focuses on care for the acute and complex adult patient. Her teaching includes recognizing and caring for adult patients experiencing an acute disease process, as well as critical thinking, disaster management, and triage.

Research Interests

Research interests are:
Transition to practice specific to acute care
Simulation with pre-licensure nursing students to prepare students for the acute care setting
Psychological safety and JUST Culture in simulation
Fall prevention in emergency departments

Professional Service

As a long standing and lifetime member of the National Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), Dr. Dawkins currently chairs the ENA Education Advisory Committee and is an active member on the ENA Foundation Scholarship Committee. Along with her team on the education committee, we ensure emergency nurses are provided with up to date educational opportunities and have access to a variety of topics and learning modalities.
