Education

Ph.D. in Ecology, University of Georgia
B.A. in Biology, Austin College

Specialization in Teaching

I have taught courses at the undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. level. This includes introductory ecology (lecture and laboratory), ecological modelling (lecture and laboratory), systems ecology, and seminars on environmental science, network science, and the history of ecology.

Research Interests

As a systems ecologist, my research is focused on discovering the processes that create, constrain, and sustain ecological systems. My expertise includes ecological modeling and network analysis, which I have used to investigate aquatic systems from the Ross Sea in Antarctica, to the Cape Fear River estuary in North Carolina, to the ecological communities that form inside purple pitcher plants.

Professional Service

I serve on the editorial board of the International Journal of Ecological Modelling, and is the elected secretary of the North American Chapter of the International Society for Ecological Modelling.

Community Engagement

I serve on the Cape Fear Museum Associates Board that provides support to the Cape Fear Museum of Science and History in New Hanover County, North Carolina. I also serve on the Alumni Board of the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia.
