Michael M. Benedetti

Professor

Dr. Benedetti is a physical geographer with interests in geomorphology, Quaternary science, and geoarchaeology. He has taught more than a dozen different courses in Geography and Geology at UNCW, including GGY 130 Geosystems, GGY 436 Ice Age Earth, and GGY 437 Soils. His research investigates geomorphic responses to environmental change, and especially landscape change in archaeological settings.

Since 2005, Dr. Benedetti has participated with an international team of scholars in the excavation of Lapa do Picareiro, a Paleolithic cave site in Portugal. More than 20 undergraduate students from UNCW have participated in this work as field and laboratory assistants under his mentorship. He also holds the position of Adjunct Researcher with the Interdisciplinary Center for Archaeology and the Evolution of Human Behavior (ICArEHB) at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal.
