Dana Brinkley Bell
Assistant Director
With a Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University School of Law, I bring more than a decade of experience in sponsored programs, with a strong focus on pre‑award administration and contract negotiation. A Wilmington native, I spent several years in Charleston working at the Medical University of South Carolina before returning home to join the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW).
My professional foundation was built in private practice and as a Launching Legal Practice Fellow at the North Carolina Department of Justice, where I developed deep expertise in legal analysis, compliance, and advocacy. This background has been invaluable in my work at UNCW, allowing me to navigate complex contractual issues with precision. I am skilled in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements that meet regulatory standards while supporting the university’s strategic objectives.
Beyond my career, I’m passionate about playing tennis, spending time out on the water, and enjoying time with my family.

Professional Service
I am committed to professional service that strengthens both my institution and the broader research administration community. At UNCW, I contribute to cross‑departmental committees focused on improving research compliance, streamlining contract workflows, and enhancing support for faculty engaged in sponsored projects. I also participate in regional and national research administration organizations, where I share best practices, stay current on regulatory developments, and collaborate with peers to advance the profession. In support of my continued growth, I received a certificate in Management Essentials through Harvard Business School, which has further strengthened my leadership and organizational management skills. Through these efforts, I aim to foster a more efficient, transparent, and supportive environment for research and innovation.
Community Engagement
I am dedicated to contributing to the Wilmington community through meaningful service, outreach, and support for local initiatives. I volunteer regularly in public elementary schools, assisting with educational activities that promote learning, confidence, and curiosity in young students. I also enjoy teaching youth tennis, helping children build skills, stay active, and develop a love for the sport. In addition, I participate in programs that strengthen connections between the university and the region, including efforts that support educational access, civic engagement, and community well‑being. These experiences allow me to stay connected to the place I call home and contribute to its continued growth and vitality.
