Pascale Barthe
Professor
I specialize in early modern France and am interested in political, religious, scientific, literary, and artistic intersections between the kingdom of France and the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal Empires. I have published articles on Guillaume Rondelet, Pierre Belon, Gabriel Bounin, Marguerite de Navarre, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, Henri Pascal de Rochegude, among others, and I am the author of "French Encounters with the Ottomans, 1510-1560" in which I examine the birth of the Franco-Ottoman rapprochement and the enthusiasm with which, before the age of absolutism, French kings and their subjects pursued exchanges--real or imagined--with those they referred to as the "Turks".
At UNCW, I most enjoy being in the classroom with my students. When I'm not teaching, I like to spend time in French archives.
