COMPLEX ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS

UNCW-coastal-sunset

The Complex Adaptive Systems Lab (CASL) at UNCW uses tools developed in the study of nonlinear dynamical systems to investigate ocean and coastal systems that are heavily impacted by human actions.

OCEAN SALINITY AND GLOBAL FRESHWATER CYCLES

UNCW-open-oceanClimate change is impacting the upper ocean, not just by raising the temperature, but by changing the salinity. Changing ocean salinity is indicative of a shifting of the global movement of fresh water and patterns of rainfall and evaporation. At the *salinity and global freshwater cycles* group, we are examining changes in ocean salinity and their impact on our warming planet.

Research Group Leader: Dr Fred Bingham

ICE & CLIMATE PHYSICS

UNCW-glacier

Much of the ice in the polar regions has been retreating for decades. In the Ice & Climate Physics Group we strive to understand how ice, atmosphere, & oceans interact and how this will affect future climates and sea levels.

Research Group Leader: Dr Till Wagner

COASTAL & ESTUARINE HYDRODYNAMICS

Coastal ResearchCoastal and Estuarine systems are society’s gateway to the ocean. At UNCW, we are interested in the physical processes operating in coastal and estuarine regions, including the Great Lakes, their impact on ecosystems, and how they might adjust in a changing climate. Our research uses a combination of observations and numerical methods applied to study locations locally, nationally, and abroad.
