Faculty and Staff Pay Tribute to Nancy Jones

Saturday, January 02, 2016

The Watson College Dean’s office hosted a reception on Jan. 21 to honor longtime Watson College business officer Nancy Jones, who announced her retirement in January.

Approximately 100 Watson College faculty and staff and friends across campus attended the event, held in the atrium of the Education Building.

Watson College Dean Van Dempsey, who assumed the role in July 2015, thanked Jones for her contributions and dedication to the college. “Nancy has been a great colleague, a fast friend and I will miss her,” he said.

Former Watson College deans Kenneth Teitelbaum and Cathy Barlow also spoke at the event.

“During my years as dean, Nancy provided a font of wisdom about the budget and I relied on her tremendously,” Teitelbaum said. “We had some challenging budget years, and we didn’t always agree, but Nancy consistently worked to improve the college, support colleagues and help the university. I personally appreciated that very much.”

Barlow, currently UNCW interim vice provost, also thanked Jones for her many years of dedication to the college and the university.

Jones began her career at UNCW as an executive assistant in the chemistry department in 1991 before joining the staff of the Watson College. She said she always enjoyed her work and was touched by the many colleagues and friends who attended the event in her honor.

“It has been exciting, challenging and rewarding and I love you all,” Jones said.

Jan Siko, executive assistant in the WCE Dean’s Office, planned the retirement celebration event.
