Students pursuing UNCW’s new accelerated master’s degree in data science and members of the local and regional business communities came together at a mixer on October 4. The event was a unique opportunity for the program’s inaugural cohort of students to meet representatives from companies in need of employees with the specialized skill set the program provides.

The 16-month program emphasizes computational-based applications of traditional data analysis methods and current trends in data mining and machine learning. The program’s advisory board includes representatives from General Electric, PPD, Live Oak Bank, SAS, Trillium, Castle Branch, NC Biotechnology Center, Cape Fear Women in Tech, Array Biostatistics, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) and ATMC.

Data science is a quickly growing field and graduates of UNCW’s program will be well-trained to compete for highly sought-after positions.
