Tina Collins is a seventh grade social studies teacher at Topsail Middle School. She graduated in May with a Master of Arts in Teaching from UNCW’s Watson College of Education.

Collins earned her bachelor’s degree in history, with a minor in English, from the University of Maryland University College (now Global Campus).

“At the time, my husband was on active duty in the Marine Corps, and we lived in several locations across the United States and in Japan,” she said. “UMGC provided the flexibility for me to complete my degree virtually while supporting my husband’s military service.”

After relocating to North Carolina, Collins began working as a substitute teacher. She later became an instructional assistant and decided to pursue her MAT, motivated by a desire to continue growing in the profession.

Collins began the MAT program as a traditional student. In fall 2025, a teaching position opened at Topsail Middle, where she had recently completed a field placement. She applied, was hired and transitioned into the residency pathway while finishing her degree.

“Balancing a full-time teaching position while completing my degree was challenging, and it would not have been possible without a strong support system,” she said. “My husband, family, professors, mentors, instructional coaches and colleagues all played an important role in helping me manage my responsibilities.”

She credits the program’s flexibility—and faculty support—for helping her succeed.

“Dr. Hilburn was especially supportive, helping me map out a plan that worked for my schedule and even adjusting my timeline mid-program so I could finish strong during my internship semester,” Collins said.

Now leading her own classroom, Collins is determined to make history come alive for her students.

“Teaching is a profession that truly comes from the heart,” she said. “When I began working as a substitute teacher, I quickly realized that I wanted to create opportunities for students to develop a genuine interest in social studies. My goal is to build a classroom environment where students can see, hear and experience history in meaningful ways.”
