Devin Pierce ’21 has been named New Hanover County Schools’ 2024 “Rookie of the Year.” Ms. Pierce earned a degree in special education from UNCW’s Watson College of Education. She is a third-year special education teacher at the International School at Gregory, where she already serves as chair of the EC department.
The award was presented at a ceremony on February 13.
“Devin is an outstanding teacher,” said WCE Associate Professor Crystalyn Schnorr Goodnight. “Her passion for teaching and dedication to her students was apparent even during her early field experiences and classroom internship. I am thrilled to see her receive this recognition.”
The Rookie of the Year process honors teachers in their 2nd and 3rd years who were nominated by their administrative team for their excellence in the classroom. This year’s finalists included two other UNCW alumni:
- Melissa Lawrence, Pre-K Teacher at Dorothy B, Johnson Pre-K Center
- Maggie Sellers, 5th grade Teacher at Snipes Academy of Arts & Design
- Breylin Young ’22, 8th grade ELA Teacher at Trask Middle School
- Sarah Wood ’21, EC Teacher at Coddington Elementary School
The Rookie of the Year award is sponsored by the Wilmington Rotary Club.
