As artificial intelligence transforms the professional landscape, fluency in AI tools has become a core skill, and the ability to understand and interact with AI is now essential for success in the modern workplace. In Fall 2025, UNCW is introducing a certificate program available to all undergraduate students in Artificial Intelligence Literacy to ensure they become career-ready graduates.
UNCW's interdisciplinary Certificate in AI Literacy is designed to equip students with essential knowledge and major-related skills to thrive in the rapidly evolving professional world. The program consists of nine credits, including six credits of core coursework focused on technical aspects and ethical considerations of artificial intelligence, along with three elective credits in the student’s discipline. Through projects and case studies, participants gain hands-on experience, preparing them to drive AI-powered innovation across diverse sectors.
“We want students to understand how AI works and how to use it in practical ways,” said Ron Vetter, founding dean of the UNCW College of Science and Engineering. “This certificate gives them the technical skills and experience they need to succeed in a world where AI is part of everyday life.”
Graduates today are stepping into a workforce reshaped by artificial intelligence. Across industries like technology, communication, finance and healthcare, AI is revolutionizing operations and redefining the skills employers seek.
“AI brings critical questions about humanity to the forefront, and our certificate ensures students employ this future-defining tool thoughtfully and with confidence,” said Stephanie Caulder, founding dean of the UNCW College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts. “As AI continues to develop and its role in society continues to take shape, leaders and innovators will need a comprehensive understanding of its potential in different professional contexts.”
