“Head Over Heels” hit the stage in a flash of color this week as the first collaborative musical the UNCW Department of Music and Department of Theatre have put on in 15 years.
With first-time directors Mark Sorensen, professor of costume design, and Nancy Podrasky Carson, dance instructor, at the helm, the comedy blends hit songs from The Go-Go’s with Renaissance-era royal drama.
“This musical has been the tonic we all needed: toe-tapping tunes and dance numbers, eye-popping costumes, sets, and lights, plenty of laugh out loud comedic bits, and a heart-warming message of love,” said Dr. Nancy King, chair of the Department of Music and professor of voice. “Who doesn't want to leave the theater feeling better and more hopeful?”
“Head Over Heels” draws students from both programs, notably from the new minor programs in musical theatre and dance. And it’s a flex of technical skill for the crew, too: Katherine Montweiler, chair of the Department of Theatre, said its 500 lighting cues are a sight more than other UNCW mainstage productions.
“We have a wonderful group of students, some performing for the first time on stage,” she said. “It’s a time to be creative and in community, and it’s great to watch everyone working together to create art.”
With musical theatre productions typically requiring more planning and commitment than other performances, King said all involved have risen to the challenge with plenty of enthusiasm. The departments aim to provide the interdisciplinary opportunity every two years.
“Head Over Heels" runs Nov. 14-17 and 21-24.
