The UNCW men’s rugby club concluded a memorable spring season with a national title, defeating Coastal Carolina, 7-0, to win the Men’s Division II 7’s National Championship. The championship showcased the best of Seahawk rugby and secured back-to-back national championships for UNC Wilmington.
UNCW and Coastal Carolina battled through a scoreless first half, with both defenses controlling the pace of the play. With just over two minutes remaining, the Seahawks finally broke through with the match’s only try, sealing the victory and lifting the national championship trophy.
The Seahawks earned their spot in the final earlier in the day with a 15-0 victory over Northwestern in the semifinals. UNCW held opponents scoreless through the semifinal and championship matches, underscoring the team’s strong defense and cohesion.
Senior Carey Cortes was named tournament MVP after anchoring the Seahawks throughout the weekend, while Maxton Buckingham led the team offensively with six tries over the course of the tournament. Both were named to the 2026 All-Tournament Team.
“It is crazy how far a group of guys can go when they come together and feel the community and school’s support,” said Marshall Wiseman, club president. “We can only get better from here…third national championship is up next!”
With another national championship in hand, the Seahawks’ season stands as a testament to teamwork, leadership and the growing strength of club sports at UNCW.
