A new reservation system to facilitate use of the UNCW spirit rocks will go into effect on Monday, Oct. 6, at 8 a.m. At that time, UNCW will lift the temporary pause on the use of campus spirit rocks and designated freedom of expression spaces.
The Policy on Displays outlines the updated process for reserving spirit rocks. The reservation system will provide structure and consistency around the rocks’ usage. Members of the UNCW community can reserve the campus spirit rocks through the Campus Reservation System. Sign in with your UNCW credentials in the top right corner, then select “Create a Reservation” to access the spirit rock reservation template.
The spirit rocks’ reservation system will allow these platforms to support freedom of expression and minimize any material or substantial disruption to the campus. Previously, the university did not actively monitor the rocks’ usage, and students were asked, as a courtesy, to leave artwork and messaging in place for at least 24 hours before repainting. A 24-hour time limit is now mandated under the new reservation system.
The designated freedom of expression spaces will continue to be governed by the Freedom of Expression by Non-University Sponsored Individuals or Groups policy. Permits may be requested using this website.
UNCW supports freedom of expression but does not allow expression that substantially disrupts campus functioning or violates state or federal laws. We encourage our campus community to embrace the values outlined in the Seahawk Respect Compact, which promotes civility and mutual respect in all interactions among students, faculty, staff and the community.
