UNCW Monitoring Tropical Storm Chantal

UNCW Alert

UNCW is closely monitoring tropical weather conditions affecting southeastern North Carolina through Sunday, July 6, 2025. Based on current information from the National Weather Service Wilmington, the forecasted conditions for the Wilmington area emphasize heavy rain, water ponding on roads and rip currents at area beaches.

At this time, the university plans to maintain its normal operating schedule. Should that change, the university will send an update. University emergency responders will continue working with New Hanover County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service Wilmington to assess Tropical Storm Chantal’s track and potential impacts on our area.

At this time, the university does not plan to send additional messaging on Saturday, July 5, unless conditions warrant earlier action. UNCW plans to send a follow-up message by noon on Sunday, July 6.

Weather Safety Awareness

Please be mindful of your personal safety during and immediately after stormy weather. Allow extra time to navigate to, from, and around campus and affected communities. Do not drive through standing water or enter stormwater runoff, which may be contaminated or hazardous. Stay alert to your surroundings when walking or driving across campus.

There is an increased risk of rip currents along the beaches near UNCW’s main campus. Please check the National Weather Service rip current risk site before heading to the beach.

Events and Activities

Weather conditions may result in changes to events and activity schedules. Please check campus venue websites to confirm hours before setting out.

Monitor UNCW Inboxes and Channels

The university will send a campus-related update by 12 p.m. (noon) on Sunday, July 6, unless conditions warrant earlier messaging. Please continue to monitor UNCW text messages, campus inboxes, the UNCW homepage and social media feeds (Facebook and X). In the event of university-level closings or cancellations, information will be shared via UNCW Alert messages, and the Emergency Information Hotline (1.888.657.5751) will be activated.
