A yearlong campus-wide effort has resulted in UNCW maintaining its STARS Silver rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System is the benchmark for higher education sustainability programs.
“It's a report that truly examines the triple-bottom line of our campus: people, planet and prosperity,” said Feletia Lee, UNCW’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “We answer questions ranging from the percentage of Pell Grant recipients to how many gallons of water we use to how much of the research our faculty does pertains to sustainability topics.”
The rating is tiered, with Platinum being the highest. This year, UNCW was only 4.8 points away from Gold. Lee is determined to “strike gold” in 2027.
“It’s going to take some work on our part to continue to open avenues between our office and academics through meaningful applied learning opportunities. We're also looking at creating educational opportunities for faculty and staff about sustainability at UNCW and in our community,” she said.
The university’s self-assessment reports the following points of distinction: UNCW’s Sustainability Advisory Council, recycling program and peer educator program. It also details sustainability efforts in the following categories: academics, engagement, operations, planning and administration, and innovation and leadership.
