A UNCW Police Department investigation has determined that alleged bomb threats written on whiteboards in a campus residence hall earlier today, Jan. 20, are a hoax. UPD identified a current student as the author of the messages, and the university will address this situation through the Dean of Students Office. Federal educational privacy law prohibits disclosure of further information about this student’s conduct.
Based on this information, there is not an immediate threat to campus. The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff and campus community is paramount, and the university will continue to carefully investigate alleged threats thoroughly. Heightened security measures will remain in place as needed.

The UNCW Police Department is investigating information about a bomb threat on the main campus, allegedly for Monday, Jan. 22. A message, written several times on whiteboards in a residence hall, makes a bomb threat about one of the three Fisher buildings on campus. None of those buildings are residence halls. The university has no information about an immediate threat to campus.
UPD is working with New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies, as needed, to conduct a complete safety sweep of affected buildings. The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff and campus community is paramount, and the university is conducting a thorough investigation. The university will provide a campus update as soon as possible without compromising the investigation.
