Christine Reed Davis has been named Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington following a national search, the university announced today. Her appointment is effective Jan. 16, 2024.

Reed Davis currently serves as associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students at UNC Charlotte. In this role she provides administrative leadership, strategic planning and management in seven program units dedicated to assessment and research, financial literacy, accountability and conflict resolution, assistance and support services, transition and success initiatives and veterans services. She was instrumental in the university’s response to and recovery from the campus shooting in April 2019.

She has more than 25 years of professional experience at UNC Charlotte, beginning with an early career position as a residence coordinator in housing and residence life. She has held numerous roles with increasing responsibilities over the years, providing Reed Davis with extensive knowledge grounded in hands-on expertise. She also served as assistant dean for conduct at Boston College in 2012-13.

“Dr. Christine Reed Davis shares UNCW’s commitment to keeping students first in the life of the university,” Chancellor Aswani K. Volety said. “We are here for them and, with Christine leading the dedicated professionals in our Division of Student Affairs, the quality of the programs, resources and services we offer our Seahawks will soar even higher in the years ahead.”

As UNCW’s VCSA, Reed Davis will lead the direction, administration and oversight of student life and student services/development programs. She will oversee the areas of housing and residence life; student extracurricular organizations; the career center; student physical and behavioral health; parent and family programs; transition programs and other student-directed services; operating with a $45 million budget and more than 1,000 staff and student employees.

“I am absolutely thrilled and honored to join UNC Wilmington as the new Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs,” Reed Davis said. “The university’s commitment to academic excellence, student well-being, and inclusive community is truly inspiring. I am excited to embark on this journey with a talented team and make a positive impact on the lives of our students. Together, we will continue to create a vibrant and supportive campus community where Seahawks thrive.”

A member of the chancellor’s cabinet, Reed Davis will provide leadership and counsel in the formulation of student policies and programs and the strategic decisions that shape the undergraduate and graduate student experience. She will fill the role currently held by interim Vice Chancellor William D. Schafer, a student affairs professional with more than 40 years of experience in higher education. Chancellor Volety thanked Dr. Schafer for his service to UNCW.

Before her tenure as associate vice chancellor, Reed Davis held other roles at UNC Charlotte, including senior associate dean of students and director of student conduct and outreach, and positions of residence coordinator and assistant director for staff and judicial programs for Housing and Residence Life.

Reed Davis holds a Doctor of Education degree from UNC Charlotte in educational leadership, a master’s in student personnel in higher education from the University of Georgia, and a bachelor’s in psychology from Central Connecticut State University. She also holds a certificate in crisis leadership in higher education from Harvard University. She has been a member of the North Carolina State Board of NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and received the organization’s national Melvene D. Hardee Dissertation of the Year Award. This year, she was the Devotion to Duty recipient of UNC Charlotte’s Employee of the Year Award.
