CHSSA Faculty Receive Prestigious National Fellowships 

Two assistant professors in the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) have received national fellowships that recognize and support scholarly excellence. The fellowships are competitive, and the faculty’s selection reflects the quality of the research taking place in CHSSA, according to the college’s founding dean, Dr. Stephanie Caulder. 

Dr. Seth Emmanuel Gaiters, assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion, and Africana Studies program, is the recipient of the 2023 Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. His research includes African American religious studies, with particular interest in the exploration of religion and race through Black progressive social movements and cultures in America. He is currently completing a book manuscript, tentatively titled, #BlackLivesMatter and Religion in the Street: A Revival of the Sacred in the Public Sphere. 

 “CHSSA is so proud of Dr. Seth Gaiters and his most recent honor as a recipient of the prestigious Ford Foundation Fellowship,” Caulder said. “This award will support his important scholarship and work here at UNCW. We look forward to the impact that its completion will bring to this critical moment in history.” 

 Dr. Candice Robinson, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology, is the recipient of a 2023-2024 AAUW American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship. Her research examines the activities of Black Americans dedicated to challenging inequality between moments of heightened protest for the 21st century movement known as the Movement for Black Lives. She will use the fellowship to work on her manuscript “That’s Our Role: National Urban League and Movements for Racial Equality.”
