Nate Miner Named Associate Vice Chancellor at NC State

Nate Miner, Associate Provost for Administration and Resource Management, has accepted the position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives in the Division of Academic and Student Affairs at North Carolina State University. NC State is a land-grant institution within the UNC System with an enrollment of over 37,800 students. After 15 years of service, Miner’s last day at UNCW will be Sept. 30. 
 
“Under Mr. Miner’s tenure as associate provost, the Division of Academic Affairs has seen positive, transformative change,” said Provost James J. Winebrake. “His impactful work, often behind-the-scenes with his team, has laid a strong foundation for our future. I sincerely thank Mr. Miner for his leadership and his nearly 15 years of service in roles across campus. His leadership will be greatly missed, and I wish him the best in this next chapter of his career. He will no doubt be a tremendous asset at NC State.”  
 
Miner joined UNCW in 2008 as a staff member and has since held numerous leadership positions. Most recently, he has served as associate provost since 2019. In this role he has provided the Division of Academic Affairs critical support for a wide range of transformative initiatives, including: reorganization of the division’s administrative offices, establishment of sustainable resource plans for numerous academic programs, processes to assist the university’s transition to Research 2 status, processes for the emergence of two new colleges, revision and improvement of the faculty recruitment process, development of business procedures for remote operations and more.  
 
Previously, Miner worked for the College of Health and Human Services during its formative years as a Business Officer and later as the Assistant Dean of Administration and Resource Management. These roles provided essential operations support as the college experienced student enrollment growth from 1,800 to 4,000, launched the university’s first Online Accelerated Program, significantly expanded degree program offerings, established a shared services model for college operations and constructed a new health sciences academic building.   
 
But Miner’s Seahawk journey originally started 20 years ago as an incoming freshman from Jacksonville, N.C., pursuing a degree in mathematics. When Miner wasn’t in class, he was an active student employee with the Office of Housing and Residence Life, serving in various roles, including resident assistant on the second floor of Schwartz Hall. 
 
As part of his studies, he completed a research project under the mentorship of Dr. Denise Terry Johnson, a former math education faculty member. The project focused on parental involvement at a local middle school and supported faculty efforts to launch a STEM summer camp program for middle school students. This summer camp program - the Jr. Seahawk Academy – is still in place today. 
 
Following graduation, Miner stayed local to the Wilmington area as a high school math teacher. When he returned to UNCW in 2008, it was to work in the Office of Housing and Residence Life as the Assistant Director for Housing Operations and then the Assistant Director of Business Operations. He also returned to UNCW academics and achieved a master’s degree in mathematics. 
 
“Reflecting on my time at UNCW, the relationships I have built with so many people over the last 20 years are top of mind,” said Miner. “The people of this institution have helped me grow from a teenager to a mid-career professional, forever changing my life and the lives of my family. For that, I am forever grateful. I am confident the work we have accomplished together will continue to have as positive an impact on the lives touched by our Seahawk community as this institution has had on mine. I will always be cheering on UNCW – go Seahawks!”
