“Extensive undergraduate research opportunities and a slate of solid sciences mixed with a bit of old-fashioned Southern charm,” are some of the qualities that have earned UNCW a spot in the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2024. The university has made the best-selling college guide since 2017.

Compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, the publication has served as an authoritative source for college-bound students and their parents for 40 years, highlighting the nation’s “best and most interesting” colleges and universities.

The 2024 entry notes UNCW’s most popular majors: nursing, business administration, communication studies, psychology and biology and newer majors: respiratory therapy, digital arts and coastal engineering.

“The university’s strengths lie in the natural sciences, especially marine biology, chemistry, ecology and other disciplines that form the core of the marine sciences,” it reads.

Other comments from surveyed students:

~ “UNCW’s proximity to the ocean provides motivated students with ample opportunities for fun in the sun and a natural lab for the school’s stellar marine biology program. Whether diving into the sea or into their studies, UNCW students are filled with school spirit.”

~“Everyone here always seems to be in a good mood and goes out of their way to speak to and help others. Maybe it’s the Southern charm in us, but whatever it is, it sure helps make this laid-back college an awesome place to attend.”

~“Professors work hard to engage students and help students succeed, even during challenging times.”

A little over a year since he formally assumed the office, UNCW Chancellor Aswani K. Volety expressed his pride at the university again earning accolades from the popular guide.

“UNCW students, their education and their experience are our “main thing” – always have been, and always will be. As fortunate as we are to be in a coastal setting, UNCW is not just a place. We are an experience and a community for our students and must never lose sight of that,” he said.

The new edition is available online and in stores today.
