Six students in the UNCW Department of Environmental Sciences have been awarded scholarships by the New Hanover County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association. The EMGVA supports students with an interest in sustainable gardening and agriculture.

“Food is an integral part of life for all people on the planet, yet its impact on the environment is often overlooked both by environmentalists and by the general public,” said Anthony Snider, associate professor of environmental sciences. “These scholarships from the New Hanover County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association allow the environmental sciences department to showcase our students that have a passion for food as it relates to environmental issues.”

Andrea Perez-Maspons, Brayden Gordy, Isabel Thompson, Kassie Robakiewicz, Taylor Weddington and Lael Collins each received $800 from the EMGVA. To be considered for the award, students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and are required to submit an essay on the importance of sustainable gardening.

“We are thankful that EMGVA continues to support our students,” said Snider. “The scholarship recipients plan to use the funds to pursue multiple aspects of sustainable food production to make the world a better place.”
