The virtual commencement ceremonies will closely mirror past traditional ceremonies, with remarks from the chancellor, provost, Board of Trustees and other university representatives. Each academic dean will address their respective school or college graduates. Each graduate will be recognized by a slide listing their name, degree earned and any applicable academic distinctions.
“We are so proud of our 2020 graduates,” said Natalie Pazmiño, assistant director of transition programs. “They have shown great resiliency and perseverance through these difficult times and, while we can’t be all together in-person, we hope that they feel recognized and celebrated for their great achievements with these virtual commencement ceremonies.”
To address the challenge of making the 2020 graduates feel as recognized and celebrated as if there was an in-person ceremony, Transition Programs organized an initiative to make a “commencement box” for each graduate. With the help of campus and community volunteers, all boxes, each containing a diploma certificate holder, two official commencement programs and UNCW keepsakes, were packed and sent in three days.
