Faculty Applications Sought for New Research Momentum Fund

Thursday, October 08, 2020

UNCW faculty members have until Oct. 16 to apply for grants through the Research Momentum Fund, a new program to support faculty in their efforts to secure external funding for research, scholarship and creative activities.

“The Momentum Fund program is a new way that UNCW is encouraging and supporting faculty to achieve the university’s strategic goal of growing research,” said Stuart Borrett, associate provost for research and innovation. “This investment should lead to increased research opportunities for faculty and students while helping the university build on its record of high-quality research.”

Provost Jamie Winebrake and Borrett developed the new fund, which will award grants of up to $5,000 to support faculty as they develop proposals for externally funded research or programs. The money can be used to purchase equipment or supplies, pay for necessary travel and cover other expenses related to proposal development.

There is also an optional $500 supplement to encourage experienced faculty to serve as research mentors.

Grant recipients must commit to submitting a proposal within 12 months.

UNCW’s strategic emphasis on scholarly research has been amplified by the university’s elevation to the category “Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity” in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

The Research Momentum Fund is administered through the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance, which also administers the long-established Charles L. Cahill Grants for Faculty Scholarship. The deadline to apply for the Cahill grants is also Oct. 16.
