UNCW Mourns the Loss of Emeritus Associate Professor of Art History John Myers
Thursday, August 06, 2020
It is with sadness that UNCW shares the news of John Myers’ passing on July 26, 2020. Myers, emeritus associate professor of art history, joined UNCW in 1980 as the sole art historian on staff. He served as chair of the department of art, music and theatre from 1990-96 and as associate director of the Honors Scholars Program from 2002-06.
He was instrumental in creating the art history program and the digital image database for the department. In 2005, the John Walker Myers Scholarship in Art History was established in his honor. He taught at UNCW for 29 years before retiring in 2009 and continued teaching part-time until 2017.
“John was an example of what we can be as faculty. He was kind, generous, hard-working and completely dedicated to his students, the department and the community,” said Aaron Wilcox, professor and chair of the Department of Art and Art History. “It was truly an honor to work with him. He is going to be deeply missed.”
Myers was dedicated to community service, serving on the Wilmington Arts Council as well as secretary, member of the board, and then president of the board of directors of St. John’s Museum, now the Cameron Art Museum.
A celebration of life will be held at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Wilmington at a later date. Memorial gifts can be made online at John Myers Art History Scholarship Endowment.
