Najee Wise, M.Ed., an academic advisor in University College, was recently named the National Society of Collegiate Scholars Founding Chapter Advisor of the Year. With more than 1.4 million members, the NSCS is a prestigious honors organization that recognizes and supports high-achieving students across the United States.

“Najee helped establish UNCW’s NSCS chapter as its advisor because he saw the opportunity to help students think about their major and career goals through the lens of a community of scholars,” said Christine Pesetski, assistant dean of undergraduate studies and director of University College. “By having an NSCS chapter at UNCW, we have joined a network of 320 other colleges and universities, and we have access to a network of community support.”

As members of NSCS, students have the opportunity to receive scholarships, internship opportunities and additional assistance to help them meet their educational goals. Wise encourages all students who are eligible to participate in NSCS to do so, and to seize similar opportunities that come their way. Enhancing academic programming and scholarly activities are key objectives of the university’s Strategic Plan.

“As an academic advisor, I work diligently to enhance the educational experience for my students,” said Wise. “To me, winning this award means that I have made a difference, and that I have made an impact on someone.”

Beginning his journey at UNCW in February 2018, Wise’s dedication to helping students achieve their goals has always been laudable. His approachability, enthusiasm and commitment made him a natural to lead the undertaking of creating a new chapter.

“Najee supports students through all of their various challenges,” said Pesetski, adding that she “cannot think of a better person” to receive this award than Wise.
