WEATHER UPDATE: UNCW to Reopen Saturday at 11 a.m.

Friday, January 05, 2018

5:05 p.m., Jan. 5, 2018

UNCW will officially reopen on Saturday at 11 a.m. for weekend activities, including freshman orientation (Sunday at 9 a.m.).  With clean-up efforts underway, classes are fully expected to begin as scheduled on Monday, Jan. 8. If that changes, a campus email will be sent and updates will appear via the university's website and other channels (below).

The university will continue to operate under the Adverse Weather Policy (Condition 2) until 11 a.m. Saturday.

All residence halls are now open, with the exception of Graham Hall, which will open on Saturday at 3 p.m. However, students are strongly advised not to return to campus until Sunday, ideally during daylight hours, to ensure as much progress as possible has been made on campus and on regional roadways.

As conditions may vary across the region and no one weather bulletin will apply to everyone, please remember that each of us is responsible for our own decisions, actions and safety. As always, students should make the travel and safety decisions that are best for them and should not travel if they believe it to be unsafe. UNCW instructors have proven to be reasonable and considerate about students' travel concerns, and we do not anticipate any issues for students who are not able to make it back to campus for Monday. Students should reach out to instructors to discuss this as needed.

When driving on roads affected by this weather event, please carry a paper map and cash; stay alert; avoid cell phone use; leave early to allow for additional travel time; reduce speed; increase following distance; and be patient. Please understand that campus employees are doing everything they can to ensure safe and passable walkways and roads on campus. However, weather conditions continue to make surfaces very slippery. Proceed slowly and with caution on and around campus.

Students, faculty and staff should continue to monitor their campus email inboxes for updates; messages with a reference to the weather in the subject line merit careful review. Updates will also be posted as conditions warrant on the UNCW homepageFacebook, and Twitter.  These channels contain the latest information available to university officials. The Emergency Information Hotline can be reached at 910.962.3991 or 888.657.5751. The hotline serves only as a backup for information already posted on
