UNCW’s Monteleone, Scott-Pollock Among YWCA Lower Cape Fear Women of Achievement Nominees

Bonnie Monteleone’11M and Julie-Ann Scott-Pollock are among the 39 nominees for the 33rd Annual YWCA Lower Cape Fear Women of Achievement Awards.

Monteleone is an administrative associate in UNCW’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She is also the executive director​ and director of science, research and academic partnerships for the Plastic Ocean Project. The Plastic Ocean Project educates through field research and seeks solutions to address the global plastic pollution problem. In 2017, Monteleone was recognized as the “Conservation Communicator of the Year” by the North Carolina Wildlife Federation for her commitment to protecting the natural resources of the state.

Scott-Pollock, an associate professor in communication studies, was the recipient of the UNCW Distinguished Award for Scholarly Engagement and Public Service in 2015 and was recognized as a “Woman to Watch” in Education by Wilma Magazine. She also directs the UNCW Storytellers, Hawk Tale Players and Just Us: Performance Troupe for Social Justice.

This year’s winners will be announced March 8 at the Wilmington Convention Center.

To be considered for the award, nominees must demonstrate excellence and commitment to their careers, schools and communities. Awards are presented in nine categories: arts, business, education, environmental, health and wellness, public service, Rachel Freeman Unsung Hero, social justice and volunteer. High school seniors from Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover and Pender counties are recognized in the Young Leader category, where three students will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Since 1985, the YWCA Lower Cape Fear has honored more than 400 Women of Achievement. The event raises support for the YWCA’s programs and services that promote racial justice and gender equality for thousands of women and their families in southeastern North Carolina.
