Tropical Storm Watch in Effect; University Operations Unaffected at This Time

Monday, August 28, 2017

7:15 p.m. --- A tropical storm watch and a flood watch are in effect for the UNCW campus and surrounding communities. Students, faculty and staff are advised to exercise caution until the storm passes.

At this time, the university plans to operate per its usual schedule on Tuesday, August 29. However, if conditions drastically deteriorate overnight and operations are affected, the university will issue an updated message by 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

As always, students who do not feel comfortable traveling to or from classes should use their best judgment and contact their instructors as needed. Faculty and staff should consult the Adverse Weather Policy (Condition 1) to determine their best personal course of action.

Throughout this weather event, please continue to monitor local weather reports, the UNCW homepageFacebook, and Twitter for the latest information. The Emergency Information Hotline at 910.962.3991 or 888.657.5751 will only be activated in the event of delays or closures. Please review the below information on hazards and campus impacts, and exercise caution both on and off-campus during adverse conditions. Thank you.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS: Heavy rain and winds; flash flooding and standing water; dangerous rip currents. Stay out of the ocean as directed by signage and safety personnel. Do not attempt to drive through standing water. Do not enter standing water on foot; there may be significant risks of infection or electrocution. Beware of downed branches, debris, and slick surfaces, particularly on steps and walkways.

TRAFFIC/PARKING: Be mindful of traffic impacts and proceed with caution and patience. Gates to the campus parking deck are currently open to give students parked in low-lying areas an opportunity to relocate their vehicles to the deck.
