WEATHER ALERT: Tropical Storm Conditions Projected for UNCW Area Tonight Through Saturday Morning; Campus Services Closing by 8 p.m.

Friday, September 02, 2016

9:20 a.m. – Due to the projected path of Hermine, tropical storm conditions are expected to impact the UNCW main campus, Onslow County site and surrounding communities tonight (Sept. 2) through Saturday (Sept. 3) morning. Campus operations will remain on schedule today, but campus services will close by 8 p.m.

The Student Recreation Center and the student center and union will close at 5 p.m. Campus Dining and  Randall Library will close at 6 p.m. Other events and activities will conclude by 8 p.m. Please see individual event websites for specific information.

The storm’s projected path indicates heavy rains and wind gusts of 45-55 mph will affect Wilmington and surrounding areas. Hazardous roads and potential flood conditions are possible, beginning Friday evening and continuing through early Saturday, Sept. 3.

Consider your safety and the safety of others: remain indoors as much as possible during the storm. Area beaches are already affected by dangerous rip currents. Stay out of the water as directed by signage and safety personnel. Potential hazards during tropical weather include downed tree limbs and debris; temporary loss of power; standing water; and slick surfaces, particularly on steps and walkways. Roadways may be temporarily flooded. Do not attempt to drive through standing water. Do not enter standing water on foot; there may be significant risks of infection or electrocution.

Students, faculty and staff are advised to exercise caution until the storm passes. As always, students who do not feel comfortable traveling to or from classes should use their best judgment and contact their instructors. Faculty and staff should consult the Adverse Weather Policy (Condition 1) to determine their best personal course of action. (This condition states that personnel can make independent decisions in regards to their safety in report to work, but personnel must use leave time if they choose to be absent.)

Should conditions change, the university will respond accordingly. Please continue to monitor the UNCW homepage, the UNCW Alert website, Facebook and Twitter for information. The Emergency Information Hotline at 910.962.3991 or 888.657.5751 will only be activated in the event of delays or closures.
