State Budget Director Drew Heath Visits UNCW

Thursday, August 25, 2016

North Carolina State Budget Director Drew Heath visited the UNCW campus Thursday, Aug. 25, joining Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli to address the 146 Honors College freshmen who attend the same freshman seminar.

“The students came to their usual class, and the focus was on leadership,” said Kate Bruce, professor of psychology and director of the UNCW Honors College. “It is wonderful that these first-year students were able to hear not only from the Chancellor but from a state official, as well.” After experiencing only a week of university life, students were asked to prepare questions for the Chancellor and for Heath prior to the seminar.

Under the appointment of North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, Heath recently became State Budget Director in February of 2016. Previously, Heath worked as Chairman of the North Carolina Industrial Commission. Originally from Wilmington, Heath expressed a desire to come back to his hometown and meet the Chancellor and discuss with students how he achieved his leadership positions throughout his career.

“UNCW and the freshmen in the Honors Program were fortunate to have the opportunity for the State Budget Director to visit with us and share his thoughts on leadership and higher education,” said Mark Lanier, assistant to the Chancellor and assistant secretary to the UNCW Board of Trustees.
