UNCW Recognizes Honors Scholars, Fellowship Recipients and Undergraduate Researchers

Thursday, March 24, 2016

UNCW celebrated the achievements of students who have exceeded graduation requirements in the inaugural Honors College Recognition and Awards Program on March 18. The program was one of the signature events leading up to the installation of Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli, who attended the ceremony.

“We are so proud of the accomplishments of these students. They have spent hours on applications for some of the most distinguished awards in the country and have been recognized for their promise as researchers and leaders,” said Kate Bruce, director of the Honors College/CSURF and professor of psychology. “We are delighted that this was one of the pre-installation events for Chancellor Sartarelli. It shows how strongly he supports the academic accomplishments of our students.”

Honorees included 13 students who received prestigious national fellowships, as well as 31 students who recently applied for fellowships such as the NOAA Hollings, Udall, Boren, Fulbright and Goldwater scholarships; and 20 students who received UNCW Undergraduate Research and Creativity Fellowships, which are made possible by donations from the Board of Visitors and other supporters of faculty-mentored research and scholarly activity.

Eleven students were recognized as Distinguished UNCW Undergraduate Research Scholars. The faculty board of the Center for the Support of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (CSURF) established the criteria for this recognition.

Student leaders in the Honors College also were announced at the event, which included a “pinning ceremony” for students who completed the course requirements for Honors Scholars.
