Office of Dean of Students, PERCH Lead Drive to Help Homeless Veterans

Thursday, March 24, 2016

The Office of the Dean of Students and PERCH, a group committed to the successful transition and university engagement of off-campus, non-traditional, graduate, and military-affiliated students, are leading a campus-wide effort to aid homeless veterans.

The offices are collaborating with Veteran Stand Down and Project Homeless Connect to collect hygiene items for homeless veterans in Wilmington. The goal is to pack 150 bags of items.

“This event brings together community resources that provide services that may assist veterans and non-veterans end their struggle with homelessness,” said Stephanie Ganser, assistant dean of students.

Other offices involved in the drive include the Division of Student Affairs, Academic Affairs and military-affiliated students, as well as local nonprofit NC Packs 4 Patriots, whose mission is to support troops and their families.

“UNCW has a strong connection to supporting veterans. The original leadership of UNCW were veterans, and we have made great strides in supporting UNCW military-affiliated students,” Ganser said. “With our strength as a military-friendly institution, it is only right to support the city we live in. Collecting hygiene items for homeless veterans is one small step to help others in need. I believe it is our duty to help those who have served our country.”

Items needed include feminine hygiene products, brushes, combs, razors, shave cream, bath gel, and shampoo. Donated items can be dropped off at the Office of the Dean of Students, Fisher University Union, Suite 2013 or at the Military Resource Lounge located in the Warwick Center. The drive will run until May 6.
