Nominations Being Accepted for the 2016 Coastal Entrepreneur Awards

Monday, March 28, 2016

Nominations are due March 31 for the 2016 Coastal Entrepreneur Awards, presented by the UNCW Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Greater Wilmington Business Journal. The annual awards were created to recognize innovators in business and encourage further entrepreneurial activity in the Cape Fear region.

“Entrepreneurship, by definition, involves not only risk taking but also adding value to our economy,” said Craig Galbraith, acting director of the CIE and director of the Office of Innovation and Commercialization. “It fuels the economic engine of growth, innovation and job creation. It is not easy being an entrepreneur, and this type of achievement needs to be supported and recognized.”

The Coastal Entrepreneur Awards are presented to companies and nonprofits in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties in the following categories: biotechnology, film, healthcare, Internet-related businesses, manufacturing and distribution, nonprofit, professional services, retail and hospitality, and technology and emerging company (defined as a business less than two years old with three or fewer employees).

Judges will select among those winners to decide which one will be honored as Coastal Entrepreneur of the Year. All winners will be profiled in an upcoming issue of the Greater Wilmington Business Journal.

Last year’s winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year Award was mimujimi, a Seahawk Innovation company. The company’s product, an ergonomic baby bottle designed to replicate breastfeeding, is sold around the world.

The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. March 31. Awards will be presented during a breakfast program on May 24 in the Burney Center at UNCW.
