The cover art that graces the official holiday card from Chancellor and Mrs. Jose V. Sartarelli was created by Melanie Annas '15 and Ryan Qualliotine '14.
“Melanie and Ryan created a memorable image that uplifts and inspires others,” Chancellor Sartarelli said. “It is an honor to showcase their talents, which were enhanced and supported by the faculty in the Department of Art and Art History.”
The artists originally developed “Souls of Remembrance” for a color theory class taught by Anne Lindberg, an assistant professor in the art department. To symbolize peace and serenity, they used images of dove wings to create the water, Annas said.
“Their particular coloring stands for the obstacles that we all may face, turbulent in the beginning, yet calming throughout the piece,” Qualliotine added. “We hoped to present a fluid, meaningful piece, and we are honored to have been chosen to represent the university that we love so much.”
Both artists described the project as rewarding, and they thanked the art department, led by Chair Amy Kirschke, for the opportunity to participate in such an applied learning experience.
